Sharing a device with family members
You can grant additional ProxyBox accounts access to your device, useful for family members who want to use the VPN/proxy but shouldn't own the device. Here's how.
Who can share
Only the device owner can share. If someone shared a device with you, you can use it but not re-share it to a third person.
Two sharing mechanisms
Method 1: share-code (easiest, recommended for family). Owner taps the 3-dot menu on their device, then "Share Device." App shows a 6-character code + QR. The recipient enters the code in their app's + menu under "Join a Shared Device." Expires in 24 hours.
Method 2: direct email invite (requires admin action). If you're admin, from the admin dashboard go to device detail, then "Grant Access to User", and enter their email + role. They get access immediately. Used for organizational / business setups.
Permission levels
- Owner: full control. Can share further (restricted below).
- Member: can use all device features, including VPN key creation. Cannot remove or factory-reset the device.
- Viewer: read-only. Sees status + metrics but can't create VPN keys, change settings, or share.
Members and viewers cannot re-share the device. Only the owner can add/remove other users.
Removing someone's access
Owner taps the 3-dot menu, then "Manage Members." Tap the user's name and pick "Remove Access." Their device entry disappears from their app within about 60 seconds. Any active VPN keys they created remain valid (you can revoke individually from the VPN section).
How many people can share a device?
Up to 10 users per device. If you need more, contact support, we can raise the limit on a case-by-case basis.
What the shared user sees
- Device appears in their Dashboard with your chosen name (e.g., "Home, Sacramento").
- They see live health status.
- Member-role: can create their own VPN keys, their own proxy credentials (a separate auth pair from yours).
- Viewer-role: sees status but no credential controls.
Their account is separate from yours. They have their own email, password, billing (if applicable). Sharing doesn't transfer billing responsibility, you stay on the hook for the plan fee.
Privacy considerations
Shared users see your device's health status, online state, and bandwidth totals. They can also create their own VPN keys and proxy credentials. If that's too much access, keep them on Viewer role or don't share.
Shared users' traffic goes through your home IP. They get the benefits; any activity is associated with your public IP. Think before sharing with non-family.
